What I've learned from reading resumes

I am very grateful that I will probably never have to create a resume or go through an interview process.  Working as a Realtor and owning Stone Realty Services does provide flexibility in my schedule and being my own boss.  Granted, I would definitely get more sleep if I wasn't doing the work AND running a business.  In order to grow and maintain our commitment to customer service, we are looking for a highly talented candidate to run our office.  We've had ads on Washington Jobs (through the Washington Post) and have recently ventured into Craigslist territory. 
Out of the more than 150 resumes we have now sorted through, I've learned a few things should I ever need to dust off my resume from when I graduated College and only had bartending and retail experience in BIG font:
1) Do not go so high-tech that you create a video resume that nobody can watch because they have to download additional software that crashes your computer: true story.  Even more frustrating the resume and cover letter could only be viewed and downloaded after the video was over.  Thus, he's OUT. End of Story.  He could have been perfect but if you make it too difficult for me to see your resume and I have another 150 in my inbox, I'm not jumping through hoops to read yours.
2) Learn how to spell. If you don't know what how to spell, learn how to use spell check.
3) Proofread your resume. Whether you use the thesaurus or let the computer auto populate a word, proofread it (and have others proofread it too) so that Instead of 'demeaning' you get what you wanted, which I assume was 'demanding'.
4) If you have a new job every six months, consider editing out some of these random employment opportunities that you have explored, so that you don't look like a flake.
5) Use a professional email address and make sure your Resume and supporting documents are saved/uploaded with professional and logical names like, "StoneResume.doc"
6) Create a new email account for your job search.  Maybe using your regular gmail account is easy to send resumes from but when sending to another gmail account, your google+ information may transfer.  Thus, the added bonus of reviewing a candidate now comes with photos of bikinis, drinking, partying and whatever else you deem necessary to post and share on the internet.  There is a reason why interviewers can not ask interviewees about their age, whether they have children, etc.  If your photos and other personal information are linked to your resume, you are at a disadvantage.  Gmail, Yahoo, Hotmail, etc are all FREE.  Take the 2 seconds to set up a professional and SEPARATE email account for your job search.
7) Personalize your cover letter beyond the address and name of the company you're sending it to in order to market yourself as the perfect candidate.  We are advertising an Executive Assistant position.  It is off-putting to read a cover letter that is obviously generic and used for every company.  For example, this job requires attention to detail, a responsible, dependable, calm person to do this job.  Reading a cover letter about how outgoing, bubbly, driven and aggressive you are is NOT what we're looking for and I will not even open your resume.
8) Do NOT send me a 4 page resume.  Do not describe your current job in excruciating detail.  I don't care that you order supplies for your office of 2 people or make the coffee in the morning.  I want to know skills and experience not tasks that make you best suited for the position that we have.
9) Unless you recently graduated from High School, I don't care if you were the head cheerleader, part of the drama club or your GPA.  Unless you recently graduated from College, I don't care if you were in a sorority or fraternity, where you traveled abroad or when you were a TA....and even if you did just graduate, I'm still not sure that I care that much.  The best resume from someone just out of college had a cover letter that explained how although he was a criminal justice major (apparently it is difficult to find work in this field) he was interested in real estate and why.  He also explained that although he didn't have any experience in my field, he worked full time while going to school (also full time) to pay for his tuition, which showed he was a hard worker.  This has a much greater impact than your extra curricular clubs when competing for a job.
10) READ the ad that you're applying for.  We are advertising a preference for someone within a 30 minute commute of Alexandria, who can travel out of state occasionally for overnight trips and for administrative assistance.  I've received resume's from people all over the country and certainly more than a 30 minute commute.  If you're willing to move here from Jersey for a job, you'd better make it clear in your cover letter, otherwise it just looks like you're mass emailing your resume to anyone with an inbox.  I've received resumes from commercial truck drivers, IT professionals, food preparation, etc.  My favorite was the woman who said she didn't really like to answer phones.  The conversation ended immediately thereafter.
Although written from my disbelief of what I've spent the evening reviewing, if you are in the process of job hunting, I hope I gave you at least one tip or item that you can tweak in your resume/cover letter that leads to your success.  -Brenda

Should I Buy a Home Now?

I'm often asked if this is a good time to buy a home. Some clients are concerned that home prices may fall further than they have already. They are assuming that the best course of action is to wait for the bottom in the market and then buy. The problem with this approach is that you don't know where the bottom is until you see it in the rear view mirror, meaning until you've missed it!

Home prices are one factor in determining your cost of ownership, but so are interest rates and financing availability. Even though interest rates have gone up in the last six months, they are still near historic lows. Since your monthly mortgage payment is a combination of paying down your principal and paying the interest owed, if home prices come down a little further but interest rates up, it could cost you even more to service a mortgage on an identical home!

While a home is a major investment, it is also the center of your personal life. It's important to live in a home that reflects your taste and values, yet is within your financial "comfort zone." To that end, it may be more important to lock in today's relatively low interest rates and low home prices, rather than to hope for a further break in prices in the future.
